Fusee User Guide
Fusee is a conductor’s companion that runs on your Android phone. You pick the job you are about to do on the layout—line a switch, couple cars, open a car door—and Fusee walks it with you in real time: the right sounds, the right crew radio calls, and the right waiting time between each move.
Getting Started
What Fusee Does
Everything happens on the phone. There is no account to make, no signal needed, and nothing leaves the device. Fusee works the same in the basement, in the barn, or at a show with no Wi-Fi at all.
Activities and Action Elements
Three things worth knowing:
- Action Elements are the smallest pieces—a hand brake being wound, a radio call, a walk between cars.
- Activities are the jobs you actually run, built from those elements. Fusee ships with a full set and you can build your own.
- Your throttle matters. Fusee asks what you run trains with, and that decides what happens when an Activity is over.
The Activity library is grouped by the kind of work: Inspection, Movement, Coupling, Securement, Safety, Industry, and End of Shift.
Install Fusee
Fusee is on Google Play. Search for Fusee by Railworks Studio, tap Install, and let Play keep it updated automatically—new versions arrive on their own over Wi-Fi.
Your First Run
Open Fusee and tap Start Operating. You land on the Conductor Activities list, grouped the way a shift actually runs.
- Tap Start Operating.
- Pick an Activity from the library.
- It starts immediately and the steps tick off as they complete.
- When it finishes, tap Done to return to the list.
Running Activities
Starting an Activity
Tap an Activity. It starts immediately and the steps tick off as they complete.
Pause and Stop
- Pause holds everything, sound included. Tap again to carry on where you left off.
- Stop Activity ends it and returns you to the list.
Intentional Waiting and Continue
Some Activities wait for you on purpose. Couple Cars stops at the point where you would go work the throttle, and waits for you to tap Continue. Its hand-off point sits in the middle of the job, exactly where a real conductor would go work the throttle.
This is authored behavior, not a bug. Couple Cars is the only shipped Activity with a hold today.
Activity Progress
The current step is highlighted, completed steps are ticked and struck through, and the bar at the bottom is the progress of the whole job.
The bar holds just short of the end while a clip is still finishing.
When an Activity Finishes
A finished Activity offers you two things, and never asks you to resume something that is already done.
Run Again and Done
- Run Again starts the same Activity over from the first step. This is the one you want when the next boxcar needs the same treatment.
- Done closes back to the Activity list.
Build short Activities for anything you repeat. Run Again then covers a whole row of cars with one tap each time.
A finished Activity is never offered as Resume. With Vector and Automatic Return, the finished screen is not shown at all—see Automatic Return.
Leaving Fusee During an Activity
An Activity keeps running while you are in another app. Nothing auto-pauses. When you come back, Fusee brings it up where it was—still running, or already finished with Run Again and Done waiting. Nothing is thrown away behind your back, and nothing clears itself on a timer.
Using Fusee With Your Throttle
Open Settings from the gear icon and pick what you actually run trains with. This is the single most important setting in Fusee, because it decides what happens at the end of a job.
Physical Throttle
A handheld throttle in your hand. There is nothing on the phone to go back to, so a running Activity shows only Pause and Stop Activity. When it finishes you get Run Again and Done, and you pick your throttle back up.
With Physical Throttle selected, no Return Behavior section appears in Settings.
External WiFi Throttle
A throttle app such as Engine Driver or WiThrottle. Return to Throttle steps Fusee aside into the background so you can bring your throttle app forward—from the recent-apps view or its icon. Your Activity keeps running the whole time, and switching back to Fusee drops you straight into it.
Vector
Railworks Studio’s own throttle on the same phone. Return to Throttle switches to Vector directly. Coming back from Vector reopens the Activity you left, still running, with its sound and timing intact.
Return to Throttle
The Return to Throttle button is shown during a run for app throttles only—External WiFi Throttle and Vector. The Activity keeps running either way.
Manual Return
You tap Return to Throttle when you are ready. At the end you get the finished screen with Run Again and Done.
Automatic Return
The moment an Activity finishes, Fusee goes straight to Vector. Nothing is shown in between. When you switch back to Fusee you are on the Activity list, and you tap the Activity again for another round.
Return Behavior only appears when you have picked Vector, because Vector is the only throttle Fusee can open for you.
Mid-Activity Throttle Moves: Couple Cars
Couple Cars is the exception in both Return modes: its hand-off point sits in the middle of the job, exactly where a real conductor would go work the throttle, and it waits for your Continue. See Intentional Waiting and Continue.
Couldn’t Return to Vector
Automatic return depends on Vector being installed on the same phone. If Fusee tries to switch to Vector and it cannot be opened, the Activity does not simply disappear. Fusee stops and tells you what happened:
Couldn’t Return to Vector
Vector could not be opened. Check that Vector is installed and review your throttle settings.
- Settings opens your throttle settings.
- Activities returns to the library.
Most often this means Vector is not installed, or it was removed. You can keep using Fusee exactly as before by choosing Physical Throttle or External WiFi Throttle in Settings, or by switching Return Behavior back to Manual.
This notice only appears when both automatic launch attempts report that nothing opened.
Settings
Open Settings from the gear icon on the home screen.
Throttle Type
Pick what you actually run trains with: Physical Throttle, External WiFi Throttle, or Vector. This decides what Return to Throttle does and what happens at the end of a job. Each choice is explained under Using Fusee With Your Throttle.
Return Behavior
This choice only appears when you have picked Vector, because Vector is the only throttle Fusee can open for you.
- Manual—you tap Return to Throttle when you are ready. At the end you get the finished screen with Run Again and Done.
- Automatic—the moment an Activity finishes, Fusee goes straight to Vector. Nothing is shown in between.
Sound Effects
The field audio: brakes, couplers, gates, air. The toggle is at the bottom of Settings.
Radio Chatter
The crew calls. Turn it off if you would rather do the talking—for instance, when you are operating with a crew who do their own calling.
Vibration Feedback
A light tap as steps advance and complete.
Appearance
FUSEE Dark for the layout room, FUSEE Light for daylight and bright spaces. The layout is the same in both; only the contrast changes.
Admin Mode
Editing the Activity library is reserved for the layout owner, so it sits behind a PIN.
Entering Admin Mode
Tap the person icon on the home screen and enter your PIN. Admin Mode can also be entered from the Activities screen. The unlock lasts for the session only.
Admin PIN
The starting PIN is 1234—change it under Change PIN.
Editing and Deleting Activities
In Admin Mode the editing tools appear above the library, and each Activity gains an edit row and a delete button:
- New Activity—build one from scratch.
- The pencil beside any Activity—edit it.
- The trash icon beside any Activity—delete just that one. Everything else stays as it is. Fusee asks first.
Restore Defaults
Restore Defaults puts the whole shipped library back, replacing your edits. Fusee asks first.
Change PIN
Use Change PIN in Admin Mode to replace the starting PIN with your own.
Forgotten PIN
There is no PIN recovery. Clearing the app’s data on the phone resets the PIN—and the Activity library with it.
Building Your Own Activities
Create New Activity
From Admin Mode tap New Activity. Give it a name, choose a category, then build it from the Action Elements listed below in groups. The Builder is only available in Admin Mode.
Action Elements
The Action Library lists every element in groups, with a search field to find one quickly.
Adding Steps
Tap an element to add it to the end of your Activity. It confirms straight away: the element you tapped turns highlighted and reads Added, the new step flashes in the list above, and the phone gives a light tap.
Arranging Steps
Every step in your list has its own controls, so nothing depends on dragging:
- The up and down arrows move a step earlier or later—add one in the wrong place and just nudge it.
- Tap a step to adjust its timing.
Timing
Each step has an editable seconds field. Tap a step to adjust how long it takes.
Duplicate and Delete
- Duplicate copies a step, handy for repeated moves.
- Delete removes it.
The copy and trash icons are on each step, shown above under Arranging Steps.
Preview
Preview walks the timing of your Activity so you can feel its length and rhythm. It is timing only—no audio plays in preview.
Save and Name Conflicts
Save stores the Activity in the library. If the name is already taken, Fusee tells you instead of quietly overwriting the other one. Names are matched without regard to case, and nothing is ever overwritten silently.
Unsaved Changes
Cancel backs out, and warns you first if you have unsaved changes: Discard Changes or Keep Editing.
Android Back Button
Fusee never lets Back throw away work by accident.
During an Activity
While an Activity is running and on screen, Back sets Fusee aside—the Activity keeps running. The Resume bar brings it back.
Minimized or Set-Aside Activity
If the Activity is already set aside, Back brings it back on screen.
Activity Builder
In the Builder with unsaved edits, Back asks before discarding them—the same Discard Changes / Keep Editing choice as Cancel.
Home Screen
On the home screen, Back asks whether you want to leave Fusee: choose Leave or Stay. It never closes silently.
Only Stop Activity ends a job early. Back never does.
Troubleshooting & Common Questions
There’s no sound.
Check Sound Effects and Radio Chatter in Settings, then the phone’s own volume and silent switch.
An Activity I expected is missing.
Admin Mode, then Restore Defaults brings the shipped library back.
There’s no Return to Throttle button.
That is expected with Physical Throttle. There is nothing on the phone to go back to, so a running Activity shows only Pause and Stop Activity.
What does Return to Throttle do with an External WiFi throttle?
Fusee steps aside into the background so you can bring your throttle app forward—from the recent-apps view or its icon. The Activity keeps running. With a WiFi throttle, keep only Fusee and your throttle app open; switching between two apps stays quick and predictable.
My throttle app warns that it’s running in the background.
Some throttle apps warn you when they go to the background. That is the throttle app talking, not Fusee, and it is harmless.
With Automatic Return, I never see the finished screen.
That is intended. On a successful automatic return Fusee goes straight to Vector the moment the Activity finishes; nothing is shown in between. See Automatic Return.
Fusee says it couldn’t return to Vector.
Vector could not be opened—most often it is not installed, or was removed. Settings opens your throttle settings; Activities returns to the library. See Couldn’t Return to Vector.
An Activity seems stuck on Continue.
It is not stuck; it is waiting for you. Couple Cars holds at its hand-off point until you tap Continue. See Intentional Waiting and Continue.
Coming back from my throttle, Fusee looks blank for a moment.
Give it a moment—it reopens the Activity rather than restarting it. Switching apps never stops an Activity.
Does Fusee need an Internet connection?
No. Fusee works with no network at all. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed.
I forgot the Admin PIN.
There is no recovery. Clearing the app’s data resets the PIN and the Activity library.
